Training session

Pitch Setup:

Area: A rectangle divided into two equal halves.

Players Setup:

  • Two teams of 10 players each (5 players in each half/rondo)
  • 4 neutral players:
      • 1 neutral player positioned at each end of the rectangle.
      • 1 neutral player positioned on the middle line (between the two halves).
      • 1 neutral player positioned inside the active half (participating in possession).

Equipment: Cones to mark the rectangle, bibs for teams, and match balls.

Drill Description:

In the Active Half:

The game starts in one half of the rectangle, where the two teams play a 5v5 possession game with the help of:

  • 1 neutral player inside the active half.
  • 1 neutral player positioned on the middle line (supporting play across the halves).
  • 1 neutral player at the end of the rectangle (providing an option for longer passes).

Teams aim to complete 8 consecutive passes while maintaining possession.

Transition to the Other Half:

    • After achieving the 8-pass target, the team in possession must transition the ball to the other half of the rectangle by passing to their teammates waiting in that zone.
    • When the ball transitions:
      • The neutral player on the middle line moves into the newly active half.
      • The neutral player who was inside the first half rotates to the middle line.

In the New Active Half:

  • The process repeats in the new half, where teams play 5v5 + 3 neutral players as described:
    • 1 neutral player inside the half.
    • 1 neutral player on the middle line.
    • 1 neutral player at the opposite end of the rectangle.

Continuous Play:

  • The game flows continuously as teams alternate between halves, maintaining possession and completing the pass targets to transition play.
Duration and Intensity:
  • Duration: 4-6 sets of 6-8 minutes each, with a 2-minute rest between sets.
  • Intensity: Middle to high intensity, encouraging players to react quickly during transitions and maintain focus in possession.
Coaching Points:
  • In Possession:
      • Encourage quick ball circulation and effective use of neutral players to create space.
      • Promote off-the-ball movement to support passing options.
      • Emphasize the importance of achieving the 8-pass target with precision and patience.
  • In Transition:
      • Focus on smooth and timely transitions between halves.
      • Ensure players adjust quickly to their new roles (e.g., neutral player rotations).
  • Defensively:
      • Encourage compact pressing to disrupt the passing rhythm.
      • Work on intelligent positioning to anticipate passes and force turnovers.
Key Points for Players:
  1. Controlled Passing: Maintain accurate and purposeful passes to retain possession.
  2. Spatial Awareness: Use the entire half and neutral players to create and exploit space.
  3. Quick Transitions: Be ready to adapt roles and positioning when the ball transitions.
  4. Communication: Coordinate movements and decision-making with teammates and neutral players.
Variations:
  1. Adjust Pass Target: Increase or decrease the number of passes required before transitioning.
  2. Neutral Player Touch Limit: Restrict neutral players to 1 or 2 touches to speed up play.
  3. Time-Limited Transitions: Impose a time limit for completing the transition to add pressure.
  4. Dynamic Neutral Players: Allow neutral players at the ends of the rectangle to move laterally along their lines.
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
  • Rushed Passes: Avoid forcing passes that could result in turnovers.
  • Lack of Movement: Ensure players are constantly creating passing lanes and options.
  • Slow Transitions: Delayed reactions during transitions can break the flow of the game.
  • Defensive Gaps: Teams must stay compact to prevent easy possession for the opponents.
Progression Tips:
  • Introduce a defensive reward system (e.g., points for regaining possession or intercepting passes).
  • Reduce the size of the rectangle to increase intensity and test players’ decision-making under pressure.
  • Add a scoring system for completing transitions to enhance competitiveness.
How It Translates to Match Situations:

This drill simulates real-game scenarios where teams must maintain possession under pressure, transition play effectively, and adapt roles seamlessly. It sharpens players’ ability to coordinate movements, use support effectively, and control tempo during transitions.
