Drill Description:

Gameplay Basics:

Objective:

  • The goal of this drill is to maintain possession and successfully complete 10 passes, which counts as one point. The team must use the neutral players strategically to move the ball around and create passing lanes.

Player Movement and Roles:

  • Players Inside the Pitch (6 players per team):
      • They are allowed 3 touches and must work together to maintain possession and pass to the neutral players when necessary.
      • Players should make quick decisions to find and use neutral players to move the ball.
  • Neutral Players (6 neutral players):
      • 5 neutral players are positioned on the perimeter of the diamond pitch, with 1 neutral playercentrally placed inside the pitch.
      • Neutral players can only touch the ball once, making them important for passing but not for holding possession. They are available for quick passes and helping to stretch the play.
  • Passing:
    • Players inside the pitch need to pass the ball between teammates and utilize the neutral players to help move the ball quickly and accurately around the diamond.
    • 10 consecutive passes must be completed for the team to score one point.

Possession and Passing:

  • The objective is to keep possession and make quick passes, utilizing the neutral players to break the defensive shape of the opponent.
  • Players should focus on maintaining a fast tempo to build attacks and avoid getting pressed by the opposing team.
  • Neutral players should be used to move the ball to different areas of the pitch and stretch the defensive lines.
  • If the ball is lost or intercepted, the defending team gains possession and starts their passing sequence to score points.

Defending:

  • The defending team will try to intercept passes and stop the attacking team from completing 10 passes. They must press effectively and position themselves to cut off passing lanes.
  • Defenders need to communicate well to prevent attackers from making easy passes to the neutral players and must work together to force turnovers.
Duration and Intensity:
  • Duration: 3-5 sets of 5-8 minutes each, with 1-2 minutes of rest between sets.
  • Intensity: High intensity, as the game encourages fast ball circulation and constant movement from both teams. The defending team must be active in pressing, while the attacking team needs to maintain quick decision-making to avoid turnovers.
Coaching Points:

In Possession (Attacking Team):

  • Utilize Neutral Players: Use the neutral players on the perimeter and inside to help stretch the play, change the point of attack, and create passing options.
  • Quick Passing and Movement: Encourage quick ball movement and off-the-ball runs to open up space. Players should always be looking for the next passing option.
  • Maintain Tempo: Keep the tempo high to avoid being pressed and to increase the speed of play.
  • Space Creation: Work together to create space for each other by moving the ball quickly and positioning yourself to offer passing options to teammates.

Off the Ball (Defending Team):

  • Compact Defending: Defenders should maintain a compact shape and work together to limit passing lanes and block the ball from reaching neutral players.
  • Pressure and Interception: Defenders must actively press the ball carrier, anticipate passes, and look for opportunities to intercept the ball.
  • Team Communication: Constant communication is crucial to ensure the defensive shape is maintained and that players can react quickly to passes.
Key Points for Players:
  1. Quick Decision-Making: Players must make fast decisions to maintain possession and use neutral players effectively.
  2. Off-the-Ball Movement: Players inside the pitch should constantly move to create passing angles and open space for the ball carrier.
  3. Communication: Players must communicate to signal where to pass the ball and to alert teammates about available neutral players.
  4. Speed of Play: Emphasize the need for quick ball circulation, with no hesitation in finding the next passing option.
Variations:
  1. Limit Neutral Player Touches: Reduce the number of touches for neutral players (e.g., 1 touch for neutral players on the perimeter and 2 for the central neutral player).
  2. Increase Passes for Points: Set a higher pass target (e.g., 12 or 15 passes) before earning a point to increase the challenge.
  3. Add More Defenders: Increase the number of defenders to 7 or 8 players for a more challenging defensive setup.
  4. Reduce Touches for Players Inside the Pitch: Limit the number of touches for players inside the pitch (e.g., 2 touches per player) to speed up the game and increase intensity
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
  1. Static Play: Avoid players standing still. Encourage constant movement to create passing lanes and options.
  2. Overcomplicating Passes: Focus on simple, accurate passes rather than attempting difficult or risky passes.
  3. Ignoring Neutral Players: Neutral players must be utilized effectively to stretch the play and move the ball around the pitch.
  4. Slow Tempo: Ensure the game maintains a quick pace to prevent the opposition from pressing effectively
Progression Tips:
  1. Introduce Time Pressure: Set a time limit for completing the 10 passes (e.g., 30 seconds), adding urgency to the passing sequence.
  2. Limit the Number of Touches: Reduce the number of touches for players inside the pitch (e.g., 2 or 1 touch) to increase the tempo.
  3. Add a Goal Scoring Element: Introduce goals to score after completing 10 passes, so the attacking team not only aims to maintain possession but also to finish their attacks.
How It Translates to Match Situations:

This drill simulates match conditions where teams must maintain possession under pressure, utilizing all available players and neutral players to stretch the defense and create space. It helps develop quick passing, off-the-ball movement, and decision-making, all of which are key in creating attacking opportunities in real games. The defending team learns the importance of compactness and communication when pressing the ball and blocking passing lanes.
