Drill Description:
Gameplay Basics:
Objective:
- The attacking team (3 players inside the square and 2 neutral players) must keep possession of the ball and complete 10 passes to earn 1 point.
- The defending team (3 players inside) works to win the ball back and prevent the attacking team from completing 10 passes.
- Once the attacking team loses possession, they must immediately react, win the ball back, and continue trying to score. The defending team, when gaining possession, must aim to keep the ball and attempt to score.
Player Roles and Movement:
- Attacking Team:
-
-
- The 3 players and 2 neutral players work together to keep possession.
- Players should move constantly to provide passing options and avoid being intercepted.
- Use quick ball circulation, utilizing all 3 touches to maintain the flow and rhythm of the game.
-
- Defending Team:
-
-
- The 3 defenders press the ball and attempt to intercept passes, closing down passing lanes.
- If they win the ball, the defenders aim to maintain possession and look for opportunities to complete passes and shift the pressure back onto the attacking team.
-
- Neutral Players:
-
- The 2 neutral players are on the attacking team’s side and can help maintain possession by offering additional passing lanes and providing space for the ball carrier.
- They are limited to 3 touches to help keep the tempo high.
Possession and Scoring:
- Scoring: The attacking team scores by completing 10 passes without the ball being intercepted or kicked out by the defenders.
- If the defending team wins the ball, they immediately switch to attack, and the previous attacking team becomes the defending team.
- The team that was attacking must react quickly to win back the ball and continue play.
Duration and Intensity:
- Duration: 3-5 minutes per round, with quick transitions between attack and defense.
- Intensity: High intensity, as players must make quick decisions under pressure. The defending team applies constant pressure to force mistakes and regain possession, while the attacking team focuses on quick passing and movement to evade defenders.
Coaching Points:
In Possession (Attacking Team):
- Quick Passing:
-
-
- Emphasize sharp, quick passing to maintain possession and avoid defensive pressure.
- Use the neutral players effectively to create more options and stretch the defense.
-
- Movement Off the Ball:
-
-
- Attackers should always be moving to provide passing options, staying mobile to find space and create passing lanes.
- Encourage quick, unpredictable movement to prevent defenders from easily anticipating passes.
-
- Control the Tempo:
-
-
- Use the 3 touches to maintain control of the tempo. Avoid slowing down the game too much, but also do not rush into risky passes.
-
- Teamwork:
-
- Encourage communication and understanding among teammates. Passing sequences should be fluid and well-coordinated.
Defensively:
- Pressure the Ball:
-
-
- Defenders should press the ball immediately and work together to close down passing options, preventing the attacking team from completing their passes.
- Encourage intelligent positioning to anticipate passes and block potential passing lanes.
-
- Compactness and Support:
-
-
- Defenders should remain compact and support each other to prevent attackers from finding space.
-
- Transition Quickly:
-
- When defenders win the ball, they must quickly transition into attack. This is where the speed of switching from defense to offense is key.
Key Points for Players:
Quick Decision-Making:
- Attackers must make decisions quickly, utilizing their 3 touches to move the ball rapidly and avoid defenders.
Communication:
- Constant communication is essential. Players need to direct each other and provide clear passing options.
Effortless Movement:
- Both attackers and defenders should be constantly moving, positioning themselves to receive or defend passes effectively.
Defensive Awareness:
- Defenders should be aware of where the ball is going, communicate with each other, and anticipate the attackers’ next moves.
Variations:
Change Touch Limit:
- Reduce the number of touches for attackers and neutral players (e.g., 2 touches) to increase the intensity of the drill.
Increase Defensive Pressure:
- Add a fourth defender to increase the difficulty for the attacking team, forcing them to maintain possession against more defensive pressure.
Score from Transition:
- Add a rule where the defending team can score a point by completing a certain number of passes (e.g., 5 passes) after winning possession
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
Slow Play:
- Avoid slow ball circulation that allows defenders to close down and anticipate passes. Keep the ball moving quickly.
Static Play:
- Players should avoid standing still. Constant movement is needed to create passing lanes and prevent the defense from intercepting.
Poor Defensive Pressing:
- Defenders must work together to press the ball effectively and not allow attackers to pass freely.
Not Using Neutral Players:
- Neutral players should be actively involved in maintaining possession. Make sure they are used to help advance the play.
Progression Tips:
Add Time Pressure:
- Introduce a time limit (e.g., 1 minute) in which the attacking team must complete 10 passes to score a point.
Change Team Roles:
- Rotate attackers and defenders regularly to give all players the opportunity to practice possession and defensive skills.
Penalty for Turnovers:
- Deduct points from the attacking team if they lose possession, emphasizing the importance of ball security.
How It Translates to Match Situations:
This drill simulates real match conditions where teams must work to retain possession while under pressure, transitioning quickly between attack and defense. It encourages quick thinking, ball movement, and teamwork in possession, while also emphasizing the need for effective pressing and defensive organization.
