Pitch Setup:
Dimensions: A square (e. g., 25×25 meters).
Equipment:
- Cones to mark the boundaries and 4 small gates inside the square.
- 1 ball.
- Bibs for two teams and neutral players.
Player Setup:
10 field players divided into 2 teams:
- 5 players per team.
2 neutral players:
- These players play with the team in possession to create overloads
Drill Description:
Game Objective:
- Teams aim to maintain possession and pass the ball through one of the 4 gates to a teammate.
- A successful pass through a gate earns the team 1 point.
- Gates are positioned inside the square, equidistant from each other, and are approximately 1.5-2 meters wide.
Player Movement and Rules:
- The team in possession can use the 2 neutral players to create numerical advantages.
- Players must adjust their positioning to create passing options and open lanes toward the gates.
- The opposing team applies pressure to block passing lanes and regain possession.
Transition Mechanics:
- When possession changes, neutral players immediately switch roles to support the new attacking team.
- The defending team must transition quickly to reorganize and close gaps
Duration and Intensity:
Duration: 4-5 rounds of 4 minutes each, with 1-2 minute breaks.
Intensity: High, focusing on sharp passing, movement, and defensive pressing
Coaching Points:
For the Attacking Team:
- Move off the ball to create passing lanes and stretch the defense.
- Use neutral players effectively to maintain possession and find openings.
- Prioritize accuracy in passing, especially through the gates.
- Keep the tempo high with quick decision-making.
For the Defending Team:
- Press aggressively to disrupt passing lanes and block gates.
- Stay compact and coordinated while tracking player movements.
- Transition quickly upon winning the ball to exploit disorganized defenses.
For the Neutral Players:
- Position intelligently to provide constant support to the team in possession.
- Read the game to anticipate and facilitate effective switches of play
Key Points for Players:
- Maintain composure under defensive pressure and prioritize accurate passes.
- Recognize when and where to move to create or exploit space.
- Defenders must work as a unit to block gates and recover the ball.
- Utilize neutral players strategically to keep possession and create chances.
Variations :
- Touch Limit: Restrict attacking players to 1-2 touches to increase tempo and encourage quick decisions.
- Scoring Threshold: Increase the number of passes required before attempting a gate pass (e. g., 3 consecutive passes).
- Gate Activation: Only certain gates are active at a time, changing every 30 seconds or after a successful gate pass.
- Bonus Points: Award additional points for consecutive gate passes without losing possession.
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
- Attackers forcing passes through gates without proper support or positioning.
- Defenders pressing individually rather than as a coordinated unit.
- Neutral players being static and not providing dynamic support.
- Teams neglecting off-ball movement, leading to predictable play.
Progression Tips:
- Reduce the square’s size to make the game more challenging and focus on tighter control.
- Increase the number of defenders to 6, creating a 5v6 situation to emphasize ball retention.
- Rotate neutral players to ensure all participants experience different roles.
How It Translates to Match Situations:
This drill simulates scenarios where teams need to maintain possession and progress through compact defensive setups. By practicing precision passing, movement off the ball, and exploiting small openings, players develop the ability to break down defenses in tight spaces.
Defensively, it trains players to press cohesively, block passing lanes, and regain possession efficiently. These skills align with Thomas Tuchel’s high-intensity, possession-based football philosophy, preparing players for dynamic in-game situations.
