Pitch Setup:
Shape: Diamond-shaped playing area.
Players Setup:
-
- 5v5 inside the pitch with 2 goalkeepers (not involved in the small-sided game).
- Offside Lines: Offside lines are marked on both sides of the pitch; players cannot cross these lines before receiving the ball.
- Goalkeepers: Positioned in the goals
Equipment:
-
- Cones to mark the boundaries of the diamond-shaped pitch.
- Bibs to differentiate teams.
- Balls for continuous play.
Drill Description:
Gameplay Basics:
Objective:
- The main goal is to score in the opponent’s goal.
- Offside rule is enforced: Players cannot enter or pass the offside lines before the ball is passed to them (similar to regular offside rules in a full game).
- Teams must complete passes, create space, and break defensive lines to score goals.
Touch Limit Rules:
- Players inside the diamond-shaped pitch are restricted to 3 touches to ensure fast play and decision-making.
- Goalkeepers are available for short passes to help retain possession or create new passing angles.
Offside Lines:
- The offside lines are positioned on both sides of the diamond-shaped pitch.
- Players must be aware not to cross these lines before the ball is passed to them, enforcing tactical discipline and awareness in offensive movements.
Goalkeepers’ Role:
- The goalkeepers are involved only in distribution and can receive passes from their team to help maintain possession or initiate attacks.
Continuous Play:
- The game runs continuously, with no stoppages. The team in possession must maintain ball control, look for space, and attempt to break through the opponent’s defense to score.
- The game resets after a goal, with teams switching sides.
Duration and Intensity:
- Duration: 3–5 sets of 5–8 minutes each, with 1–2 minutes of rest between sets.
- Intensity: High intensity, with players required to make quick decisions and maintain a high tempo to break the defensive setup and create goal-scoring opportunities.
Coaching Points:
In Possession:
- Quick Passing and Movement: Encourage quick passing and off-the-ball movement to stretch the defense and find space.
- Goalkeeper Distribution: Ensure that players make use of the goalkeeper to restart play or stretch the opposition, especially when under pressure.
- Offside Awareness: Ensure players stay behind the offside line until the ball is passed to them to avoid being penalized for offside.
- Width and Depth: Use the width and depth of the diamond-shaped pitch to stretch the defense, ensuring there are passing lanes available.
Off the Ball:
- Creating Passing Angles: Players should constantly offer support to the ball carrier and create passing angles.
- Movement to Receive: Avoid static play; players need to make runs to open up passing lanes, particularly while staying onside.
- Pressing the Ball: Without the ball, defenders must be compact and organized to limit space and prevent the attacking team from breaking through.
Defensively:
- Compact Defensive Shape: Defenders should stay compact to protect against long passes and keep the opposition from exploiting gaps.
- Offside Discipline: Defenders must be mindful of the offside lines, positioning themselves to prevent attackers from running behind them.
- Quick Transitions: Once the ball is won, the defending team must transition quickly into attack, using their goalkeeper or finding space for a fast counter-attack.
Key Points for Players:
- Speed of Play: Maintain a quick tempo by limiting touches and moving the ball rapidly across the pitch.
- Communication: Constantly talk to teammates to coordinate offensive and defensive movements.
- Offside Awareness: Be mindful of the offside line, especially when making runs or receiving the ball.
- Constant Movement: Avoid standing still; always look to support the ball carrier and find space to receive the ball.
- Focus on Possession: Don’t force risky passes or long shots; prioritize maintaining possession and building the attack through patient passing
Variations:
- Touch Limit Adjustments: Reduce the number of touches allowed to players inside the pitch (e.g., 2 touches) to increase intensity.
- Goalkeeper Involvement: Limit the goalkeeper’s ability to pass to players inside the pitch (e.g., only pass after 3 consecutive passes from field players).
- Offside Adjustments: Experiment with adjusting the offside line’s distance or allow one or two players per team to be exempt from offside rules to promote attacking runs.
- Switching Roles: Allow players to switch positions with the goalkeeper after a set number of goals or minutes to increase involvement and adaptability
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
- Static Play: Players should not remain stationary. Movement off the ball is key to creating space and maintaining passing lanes.
- Forcing Play: Avoid forcing passes or shooting from poor positions; maintain composure and look for better options.
- Ignoring Offside Rules: Players should not neglect the offside lines; understanding the offside rule is crucial to maintaining proper positioning.
- Defensive Disorganization: Defenders must not become disorganized or spread out too thin; they need to be compact and maintain communication.
Progression Tips:
- Increase Game Complexity: Reduce the number of touches allowed to each player to increase speed and intensity.
- Defensive Challenges: Add additional defensive players or allow the team defending the 2 goals to add more players in the diamond shape to challenge the attacking team further.
- Timed Transitions: Set a time limit for each attack (e.g., 30 seconds) to force quicker decision-making and movement.
How It Translates to Match Situations:
This drill simulates match scenarios where teams need to maintain possession, create attacking opportunities while adhering to offside rules, and defend compactly to prevent opponents from breaking through. It enhances decision-making, tactical discipline, and offensive/defensive coordination under pressure.
