FC Bayern Munich – SSG 5v5+1 with finishing by Julian Nagelsmann

Objective of the Drill:

This drill focuses on possession play, quick transitions, and finishing under pressure. Players work on maintaining ball control in a small-sided game, transitioning effectively to create overload situations, and executing decisive finishes.

Training session

Pitch Setup:

Area: A square (20×20 meters recommended) for possession play with two full-sized goals placed 20 meters outside the square on opposite ends.

Players Setup:

  • Inside the Square: 3v3 + 1 neutral player who always supports the team in possession.
  • At Each End of the Square: 1 player from each team (stationary during possession).
  • Goalkeepers: Positioned at each full-sized goal.

Equipment:

  • Cones to mark the square
  • 2 full-sized goals
  • bibs for teams
  • balls
Drill Description:

Possession Phase (Inside the Square):

  • Teams compete in a 3v3 possession game with the support of a neutral player (3v3+1).
  • The team in possession can use their stationary teammate at either end of the square, creating a temporary 5v3+1 advantage.

Transition to Finishing (7-Pass Rule):

  • After completing 7 consecutive passes, the team in possession must play the ball to their stationary teammate at the end of the square.
  • A supporting player from inside the square joins that stationary teammate to create a 2v1 situation against the opposing end player.

2v1 Finishing Phase:

  • The 2v1 is played toward the goal closest to the stationary teammate.
  • The attacking duo must aim to score, working on quick decision-making and accurate finishing under pressure.

Immediate Restart:

  • After the 2v1 finishes, the coach quickly restarts play with a pass to the opposite end of the square.
  • The same team now transitions into a 2v1 attacking situation on the other goal against the team who lost in the possession game

Continuous Play:

  • Once both 2v1 situations are completed, the possession game inside the square resumes.
Duration and Intensity:
  • Duration: 4-6 sets of 6-8 minutes each with a 2-minute break between sets.
  • Intensity: High, as players must transition quickly between possession, attack, and defensive roles.
Coaching Points:

In the Possession Phase:

  • Maintain a high tempo in the 3v3+1 game.
  • Use the neutral player and wide options effectively to stretch the defense.
  • Focus on accurate passing and quick ball circulation to reach the 7-pass target.

In the Transition Phase:

  • Attackers must exploit the 2v1 quickly with precise decision-making.
  • The supporting player from the square must time their run effectively to join the stationary teammate.

Defensive Phase:

  • The defender in the 2v1 must delay and disrupt the attack, reducing the attacking duo’s space and time.
  • Inside the square, defenders should stay compact and press the ball intelligently
Key Points for Players:
  1. Fast Transitions: React immediately after achieving the passing target or losing possession.
  2. Decision-Making: Choose the right moment to attack or pass in both possession and 2v1 phases.
  3. Clinical Finishing: Focus on accuracy and composure when finishing in the 2v1 situations.
Variations:
  1. Reduce Passing Target: Decrease the required number of passes before transitioning to encourage faster play.
  2. Add Time Limits: Impose a time limit for executing the 2v1 to add pressure.
  3. Vary Touch Limits: Restrict players in the possession game to 2 or 3 touches for added difficulty.
  4. Dynamic End Players: Allow end players to move along their end line, creating more dynamic passing angles.
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
  • Possession Errors: Rushing passes or neglecting off-the-ball movement inside the square.
  • Poor Timing in Transition: Support players arriving late to the 2v1 situation.
  • Finishing Errors: Failing to capitalize on the numerical advantage in the 2v1.
  • Defensive Missteps: Lack of compactness inside the square, leading to easy penetration.
Progression Tips:
  • Introduce additional constraints, such as requiring a one-touch finish in the 2v1.
  • Reduce the size of the square to increase the intensity of the possession game.
  • Add a scoring bonus for goals scored within a certain time limit after the pass to the end player.
How It Translates to Match Situations:

This drill mimics scenarios where teams must maintain possession under pressure, transition quickly to attack, and exploit numerical advantages near the opponent’s goal. Players develop skills in retaining the ball, creating overloads, and finishing decisively, all of which are crucial in match settings.
