Pitch Setup:

Dimensions: A square (e.g., 30×30 meters).

Goals:

  • 8 small goals positioned inside the square.
  • 2 goals on each side of the square: one goal belongs to each team on every side.
  • Teams must defend their 4 designated goals, which are not adjacent.

Equipment:

  • 8 small goals, 1 ball, cones to mark the boundaries.
  • Bibs for the two teams and neutral players
Player Setup:

12 field players divided into 2 teams:

  • 6 players per team (attack and defend based on possession).

6 neutral players:

  • Neutral players support the team in possession, creating constant numerical superiority.
Drill Description:

Game Objective:

  • The attacking team must maintain possession and complete 10 passes before attempting to score on one of the opponent’s 4 goals.
  • Neutral players assist the attacking team by providing passing options and maintaining possession flow.

Scoring Mechanics:

  • A team earns a point by scoring through one of the 4 designated goals of the opposing team.
  • Scoring is only allowed after completing the required 10 passes.
  • The attacking team must exploit space and time their passes effectively to score.

Defensive Mechanics:

  • The defending team focuses on protecting their 4 designated goals and disrupting the attacking team’s passing rhythm.
  • Defenders must organize compactly to cover all goals while applying pressure to regain possession.

Transition Mechanics:

  • When the defending team wins the ball, they immediately switch to attack with the support of the 6 neutral players.
  • The previous attacking team transitions into defense to protect their 4 goals
Duration and Intensity:

Duration: 3-4 rounds of 5 minutes each, with 1-2 minute breaks.

Intensity: High, requiring continuous movement, quick transitions, and sharp decision-making

Coaching Points:

For the Attacking Team:

  • Stay patient and move the ball quickly to maintain possession and build up to the passing requirement.
  • Use neutral players effectively to stretch the defense and find openings.
  • Focus on timing and accuracy when attempting to score through the goals.

For the Defending Team:

  • Communicate and coordinate to cover all 4 goals effectively.
  • Press intelligently to disrupt passing lanes and force turnovers.
  • Stay organized during transitions to prevent easy scoring opportunities.

For the Neutral Players:

  • Position intelligently to provide constant support and passing options for the attacking team.
  • Facilitate quick transitions when possession changes.
Key Points for Players:
  1. Attackers must stay composed under pressure and use the neutral players strategically.
  2. Defenders must work as a unit to protect their goals without leaving gaps.
  3. Neutral players are crucial for maintaining rhythm and switching play effectively.
  4. Transitions should be sharp, with a focus on reorganizing quickly.
Variations:
  1. Touch Limit: Restrict attackers and neutral players to 1-2 touches to increase speed and decision-making.
  2. Pass Count Adjustment: Change the passing requirement to 8 or 12 passes for varying levels of difficulty.
  3. Time Constraint: Limit the time allowed for each possession phase (e.g., 20 seconds to complete 10 passes).
  4. Bonus Goals: Assign bonus points for scoring through two consecutive goals on different sides.
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
  • Attackers rushing passes to meet the count requirement, leading to turnovers.
  • Defenders failing to communicate and leaving gaps near goals.
  • Neutral players being static and not adjusting to the flow of play.
  • Teams neglecting movement off the ball, resulting in predictable play.
Progression Tips:
  • Reduce the square’s size to challenge tighter control and quicker passing.
  • Increase the number of defenders to raise pressure on the attacking team.
  • Rotate neutral players regularly to provide all participants with diverse roles.
How It Translates to Match Situations:

This drill reflects real-game possession scenarios where teams must build up patiently under pressure and exploit openings to penetrate compact defenses. It also trains defenders to anticipate and cover multiple threats simultaneously, sharpening both offensive creativity and defensive coordination.

The inclusion of neutral players mirrors the role of linking players in midfield, a critical aspect of Thomas Tuchel’s structured yet dynamic approach to football.
