Drill Description:

Gameplay Basics:

  • Inside the hexagon, teams play 5v5 possession with the help of:
    • 2 neutral players inside the hexagon.
    • 3 teammates positioned on the lines of the hexagon.
  • The objective is to maintain possession and complete 10 passes to earn a point.

Touch Limit Rules:

  • Players inside the hexagon: Allowed 3 touches.
  • Neutral players and players on the lines: Restricted to 1 touch to encourage quick decisions.

Scoring System:

  • Teams earn 1 point for every 10 consecutive passes completed.
  • Possession resets after the ball is intercepted, and the opposing team begins their sequence.

Continuous Play:

  • The game flows continuously, emphasizing maintaining possession while using all available players.

Duration and Intensity:

  • Duration: 3-5 sets of 5-8 minutes each, with 1-2 minutes of rest between sets.
  • Intensity: High intensity, as players must constantly move and make quick decisions to retain possession.

Coaching Points:

In Possession:

  •
    • Use the neutral players and line players effectively to stretch the play and create space.
    • Encourage quick ball movement and utilization of limited touches to maintain tempo.
    • Focus on triangles and passing lanes to avoid turnovers.

Off the Ball:

  • Promote continuous movement to provide passing options.
  • Emphasize proper positioning to balance attacking and defensive readiness.

Defensively:

  • Encourage compact pressing to disrupt passing sequences.
  • Teach players to anticipate and intercept passes, especially when opponents are under pressure.

Key Points for Players:

  1. Speed of Play: Maintain a quick tempo by minimizing time spent on the ball.
  2. Communication: Constantly communicate with teammates to identify passing options.
  3. Support Play: Inside players should offer angles, while line players stretch the play horizontally.
  4. Patience in Possession: Avoid forcing risky passes; instead, prioritize safe and accurate ball circulation.

Variations:

  1. Change Touch Limits: Reduce the number of touches for inside players to increase difficulty.
  2. Modify Pass Target: Adjust the required number of passes to score points (e.g., 8 or 12 passes).
  3. Add Defensive Pressure: Allow line players to occasionally step inside to challenge possession.
  4. Dynamic Line Players: Permit line players to rotate positions along the hexagon for added movement.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  1. Static Play: Avoid players becoming stagnant; emphasize constant off-the-ball movement.
  2. Overcomplicating Play: Keep passes simple and prioritize possession over risky plays.
  3. Ignoring Line Players: Ensure line players are actively involved in the possession sequence.
  4. Slow Tempo: Encourage quicker transitions and decision-making to maintain game intensity.

Progression Tips:

  • Gradually increase the speed of play by introducing time limits for completing 10 passes.
  • Implement a rule where teams must use a specific number of line players in their passing sequence.
  • Introduce a point deduction for turnovers to emphasize ball security.

How It Translates to Match Situations:

This drill simulates real-game conditions where teams must maintain possession under pressure, use the full width of the pitch, and involve players from different zones. It enhances decision-making, teamwork, and quick reactions to game dynamics.
