Objective of the Game:

  • Transition to Defense: Once the attacking team loses possession, they must immediately transition to defend the 2 big goals at the ends of the pitch.
  • The defending team aims to block the small goals and, when they win possession, they quickly transition and try to score in the 2 big goals.

Attacking Team’s Mechanics:

  • Build-up Play: The 5 attacking players, with the help of the 2 goalkeepers, focus on maintaining possession, creating passing lanes, and trying to score through the 4 small goals.
  • Goalkeepers’ Role: Both goalkeepers stays on goals, supporting the ball circulation and helping to create attacking options.
  • Transition to Defense: When the attacking team loses the ball, all players (including the goalkeepers) must quickly react and move to defend the 2 big goals.

Defending Team’s Mechanics:

  • Defending the Small Goals: The 4 defending players are responsible for blocking the 4 small goals and preventing the attacking team from scoring.

Scoring

  • Defenders: The defending team scores by winning possession and scoring in one of the 2 big goals on either end of the pitch.
Duration and Intensity:
  • Duration: 3-5 rounds of 5-7 minutes with 1-2 minute breaks between rounds.
  • Intensity: Moderate to high, as the drill focuses on quick transitions between attack and defense.
Coaching Points:

For the Attacking Team:

  • Possession and Build-up: Encourage the attacking players to maintain possession, be patient, and create opportunities to score through the small goals.
  • Goalkeepers: Goalkeepers should actively participate in the build-up play, providing passing options and helping circulate the ball forward.
  • Transitioning to Defense: Upon losing the ball, the attacking team must immediately react and transition to defending the 2 big goals, staying compact and organized.

For the Defending Team:

  • Defending the Small Goals: The defenders must remain compact and organized to block the small goals, preventing the attackers from creating clear scoring chances.
  • Winning Possession: Defenders should press and win the ball back as quickly as possible, transitioning into attack with speed.
  • Transition to Attack: Once the ball is won, the defending team must be quick and decisive in attacking the 2 big goals, looking for passing options and exploiting space.
Key Points for Players:

For Attackers:

  • Focus on maintaining possession and building the attack with quick, precise passes.
  • React quickly when possession is lost, transitioning to defend the big goals.
  • Use movement off the ball to create space and passing lanes.

For Defenders:

  • Stay compact when defending the small goals, limiting space and options for the attackers.
  • Press effectively when the ball is lost and win possession as quickly as possible.
  • Transition to attack quickly after winning the ball, with a clear focus on scoring in the big goals.
Variations:
  1. Limit Attacker’s Touches: Restrict the number of touches per attacking player (e.g., 2 or 3 touches) to increase tempo and encourage quicker decision-making.
  2. Defenders’ Attack Limitations: Only allow the defending team to score after completing a certain number of passes (e.g., 3 or 4 passes) after winning possession to simulate effective build-up play.
  3. Change the Number of Attackers/Defenders: Add more attacking players or increase the number of defenders to increase or decrease the pressure on both sides.
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
  • Slow Transitions: Attackers not reacting quickly enough to transition to defense, leaving the 2 big goals vulnerable.
  • Defenders Not Pressing Effectively: Defenders failing to press high enough and allowing the attacking team to maintain possession too easily.
  • Goalkeepers Being Passive: Goalkeepers not supporting the build-up play actively or failing to react quickly enough in transition moments.
Progression Tips:
  • Increase the number of defenders to make it more challenging for attackers to score on the small goals.
  • Allow multiple scoring opportunities for defenders to improve their counter-attacking play.
  • Add restricted zones where attackers can only score after passing through specific areas of the pitch to add complexity and tactical awareness.
How It Translates to Match Situations:

This drill simulates real-match transitions where teams must react quickly after losing possession and switch between attacking and defending roles. It works on defensive shape, quick reactions, and fluid transitions in attack. The focus on possession, quick passing, and immediate transition makes this drill highly effective for developing match-specific decision-making and movement under pressure.
