Pitch Setup:

Dimensions: A diamond-shaped pitch divided into three zones with offside lines marked to separate the zones.

Goals: Two full-sized goals positioned at each end with goalkeepers assigned to them.

Equipment:

  • Cones or markers to create the offside lines and divide the zones.
  • Two big goals
  • bibs for teams
  • balls
Player Setup:

6v6 Outfield Players: Two teams of six outfield players compete within the diamond-shaped pitch.

  • Each team operates within the constraints of the offside rules in their attacking zone.
  • Players must stay disciplined in their zones until the ball progresses to the final zone.

2 Goalkeepers: Each goalkeeper is positioned at a goal and plays for their respective team.

  • Goalkeepers are not part of the 6v6 setup but play a critical role in organizing the defense and supporting their team’s build-up.
Drill Description:

Objective of the Game:

  • The game is played 6v6 with an emphasis on building play through the zones while adhering to offside constraints.
  • Offside Rules in Final Zone:
    • Attackers cannot enter the final zone (behind the offside line) until a pass is made to them. If they do, they are ruled offside.
    • Defenders are restricted to only three players inside the final zone at a time to ensure fair attacking opportunities.
  • Normal Goal Scoring Rules: Teams score goals by breaking into the final zone at the right time and beating the goalkeeper.

Gameplay Mechanics:

  • Building Through the Zones: Teams must build their attacks systematically by progressing the ball from zone to zone. Quick passing, intelligent movement, and off-the-ball runs are critical.
  • Final Zone Play:
    • Attackers must time their runs to perfection, ensuring they receive the ball after it has been played into the final zone.
    • Defenders can send a maximum of three players to protect the final zone, adding a layer of strategic decision-making.
    • Once in the final zone, attackers are free to shoot or pass to score.
  • Goalkeeper’s Role: Goalkeepers actively participate by organizing their team’s defense and initiating quick counterattacks when their team regains possession.
Duration and Intensity:
  • Duration: 3-4 rounds of 8-10 minutes with 2-3 minutes of rest between rounds.
  • Intensity: High intensity, focusing on maintaining positional discipline, quick transitions, and sharp attacking plays.
Coaching Points:

For Attackers:

  • Focus on timing runs into the final zone. Avoid entering too early to stay onside.
  • Build play systematically by using the central and middle zones effectively before progressing.
  • Utilize quick passes and off-the-ball movement to break defensive lines.
  • Look for opportunities to combine with teammates and exploit spaces in the defensive shape.
  • Be patient and ensure high-quality passing to maintain possession.

For Defenders:

  • Maintain defensive shape and discipline, ensuring a balance of players across all zones.
  • Communicate effectively to decide which three defenders will drop into the final zone when needed.
  • Press attackers in the central and middle zones to delay their progression to the final zone.
  • Stay compact and anticipate runs into the final zone to intercept passes or block shots.

For Goalkeepers:

  • Organize the defense and provide constant communication to the backline.
  • Be alert for quick transitions to initiate counterattacks or clear dangerous balls.
  • Stay ready to face 1v1 situations or long-range shots from the middle zone
Key Points for Players:

For Attackers:

  • Focus on timing and precision when making runs into the final zone.
  • Keep possession in the middle zone and look for openings to exploit.
  • Stay calm under pressure and ensure quality shots on target.

For Defenders:

  • Coordinate with teammates to decide who drops back into the final zone.
  • Press aggressively in the middle zone to prevent the ball from progressing.
  • Stay disciplined and compact in your defensive setup.

For Goalkeepers:

  • Stay engaged throughout the drill and provide clear communication to defenders.
  • Be ready to face shots or initiate counterattacks when the ball is regained.
Variations:
  1. Add Touch Limits: Introduce a limit on the number of touches players can take (e.g., two or three touches) to increase the intensity and decision-making speed.
  2. Modify Defenders in Final Zone: Adjust the number of defenders allowed in the final zone (e.g., increase to 4 or reduce to 2) based on the skill level of the players.
  3. Progressive Passing Requirement: Require a set number of passes (e.g., 4 or 5) in each zone before advancing to the next zone to encourage controlled build-up play.
  4. Neutral Players: Add neutral players in the middle zone to create more passing options for the attacking team.
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
  • Entering the Final Zone Too Early: Attackers need to time their runs properly to avoid being ruled offside.
  • Overloading the Final Zone: Teams must avoid sending too many players into the final zone and losing balance in other zones.
  • Lack of Coordination: Defenders should communicate effectively to decide who drops back into the final zone.
  • Goalkeeper Disconnect: Goalkeepers should stay connected with their team, providing instructions and support for quick transitions.
Progression Tips:
  • Gradually reduce the space of the zones to increase intensity and force quicker decision-making.
  • Increase the number of defenders allowed in the final zone to make scoring more challenging.
  • Introduce specific targets, such as a minimum number of shots on goal per round, to encourage more attacking actions.
How It Translates to Match Situations:

This drill mimics real match scenarios where attackers must time their runs to beat defensive lines while defenders work to delay or prevent attacking movements. It helps players understand offside rules, improves defensive and attacking organization, and develops the ability to transition between phases of play. The use of zones ensures players are aware of spacing and positioning, vital skills for match situations.
