Goals: Four small goals (two on each of the opposite sides of the square).

Neutral Players:

  • Two neutral players positioned between the small goals on each side of the pitch.
  • One neutral player positioned inside the square to support attacking play.

Player Setup:

4v4 Outfield Players:

  • The attacking team has two players positioned inside the square and two players positioned on the sides of the pitch.
  • The defending team has all four players positioned inside the square.

3 Neutral Players:

  • Two neutral players are positioned between the small goals (on each side).
  • One neutral player is positioned inside the square.
  • Neutral players always play for the team in possession.
Drill Description:

Objective of the Game:

  • Teams aim to score on any of the four small goals, but a goal is only valid if it comes directly from a back pass by a neutral player between the goals and is scored on the first touch.

Gameplay Mechanics:

  • Attacking Setup:
      • The attacking team has two players inside the square working to create passing combinations and two players on the sides of the pitch providing width and support.
      • Neutral players between the goals are crucial for setting up scoring opportunities.
  • Defensive Setup:
      • The defending team begins with all four players inside the square, working to disrupt the attackers’ play and regain possession.
  • Transition Rules:
      • When the defending team wins possession, they immediately transition to become attackers.
      • Two players from the attacking team who were on the sides must react and transition back into the square to defend. Simultaneously, two players from the defending team must quickly move to the sides to take on the attacking width roles.
  • Neutral Players’ Role:
    • Neutral players between the small goals are limited to one touch and must play the ball back to attackers to create scoring chances.
    • The neutral player inside the square offers an extra passing option but has no touch restriction.

Scoring Rules:

  • Goals can be scored on any of the four small goals.
  • A valid goal must follow a back pass from one of the neutral players between the small goals and be taken on the first touch.

No Restrictions on Passing:

  • Players inside the square are free to make unlimited passes to build up play.
Duration and Intensity:
  • Duration: 4-6 rounds of 4-6 minutes each with 2-3 minutes of rest between rounds.
  • Intensity: High, focusing on quick reactions and transitional play.
Coaching Points:

For Attackers:

  • Use neutral players effectively to create clear scoring chances.
  • Ensure good positioning and movement off the ball to exploit defensive gaps.
  • Transition quickly to defensive roles when possession is lost.
  • Work on timing the back pass and the first-touch finish effectively.

For Defenders:

  • Stay compact and organized to block passing lanes.
  • Anticipate passes to neutral players and press to disrupt scoring opportunities.
  • React quickly to transitions and take up the appropriate attacking roles.

For Neutral Players:

  • Be alert and position yourself to support quick back passes.
  • Make fast, accurate decisions with your limited touches.
Key Points for Players:

Positioning and Awareness:

  • Maintain good spacing and balance between players inside the square and on the sides.
  • Always be aware of your role during transitions.

Decision-Making:

  • Use quick and precise passes to progress play.
  • Look for the right moment to use neutral players to set up scoring chances.

Transition Speed:

  • React immediately when possession changes to either defend or attack effectively
Variations:
  1. Change Touch Limits: Allow unlimited touches for neutral players or restrict inside players to one or two touches for greater difficulty.
  2. Adjust Neutral Roles: Add an extra neutral player inside the square or allow neutral players between the goals to move into the square.
  3. Modify Scoring Rules: Require multiple passes to neutral players before scoring or allow goals directly without back passes
Common Mistakes to Avoid:

Attacking Players:

  • Failing to utilize neutral players effectively.
  • Delayed reactions during transitions, leaving teammates outnumbered.

Defending Players:

  • Overcommitting to pressing, leaving gaps for attackers to exploit.
  • Slow transition to attacking roles when possession is regained.

Neutral Players:

  • Staying static or not providing effective passing options.
Progression Tips:
  • Reduce the space inside the square to increase the challenge for attackers and defenders.
  • Introduce a time limit for scoring once the ball is played to a neutral player to increase intensity.
  • Increase the number of touches allowed for defenders to improve ball retention during transitions.
How It Translates to Match Situations:

This drill mimics real-game scenarios where teams must adjust quickly during transitions, work on exploiting space, and execute accurate finishes. Players develop better positional understanding, communication, and the ability to capitalize on numerical advantages.
